guest lecturer: tom shiner

A native of Washington, DC, Tom Shiner is an architect who designs furniture. Around 1994 Shiner designed a stacking stool for the educational programs at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. Eventually his wood stool became THE MUSEUM STOOL®. The success of the stool with museum educators opened the door for other furniture designs for museums and public spaces.

M&LF, Shiner’s furniture company (www.themuseumstool.com), recently provided furniture for exhibits at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, The Birmingham Museum of Art, the US Holocaust Memorial, Monticello, and other cultural institutions.

M&LF has a showroom at Dupont Circle in Washington. Shiner lives and works in DC and Montana. He is working with a Montana manufacturer to build samples of his LC and AB chairs for eventual production. Shiner has designed renovations, additions and new houses. He won an award for preservation from the Bozeman Planning Department for his restoration of a small house in the historic district.
